Rovio's quarterly revenue from games jumped by 16%. The main driver of growth is Dream Blast
Affairs at Rovio are on the mend. The company reported an increase in gaming sales in the first quarter of this year, a successful launch of a new product, and also shared the ARPDAU of its projects.
Overall financial results
The company earned €70.9 million in January-March (an increase of 7.8% — here and further comparison with the same results last year). Most of this amount came from earnings from the games — €66.3 million (an increase of 16.6%).
But if we talk about pre-tax profit (EBITDA), it fell by 26.7% to €10.5 million. But this is not the fault of the gaming division. The problem is a 48.2% drop in revenue from licensing. The company associates him with the low results of “Angry Birds in the cinema”.
EBITDA of the company’s games, on the contrary, showed good growth — 10.3%. The profit of Rovio games for January-March amounted to €11.2 million.
Rovio explains the good gaming performance by two factors:
- excellent results of Angry Birds 2;
- the successful January release of Angry Birds Dream Blast.
Game indicators
Despite the decrease in traffic costs specifically for Angry Birds 2, sales of the mobile game increased by 48%, reaching €32 million. Today it is the most earning Rovio game.
Angry Birds 2
The second most earning Rovio game is Angry Birds Friends, released in 2013.
Its revenue for the quarter was €7.2 million.
Angry Birds Friends
However, Rovio in its report focuses on the Angry Birds Dream Blast released a couple of months ago.
The game earned €6.9 million in its first quarter (Rovio boasts that if the game had been released not at the end of January, but at the beginning, then by the end of three months its revenue could have amounted to € 11 million). And the company is very happy with this figure, considering that of the € 23.7 million spent on traffic in the quarter, most of it went to Dream Blast (i.e., the project is relatively quickly fighting off advertising costs).
Angry Birds Dream Blast
Rovio also has such games as Angry Birds Match (earned €6.8 million in the quarter) and Angry Birds Blast (earned €3.3 million in the quarter).
At the same time, the rest of the company’s portfolio has problems. The total revenue of all non-mentioned Rovio projects amounted to €9.7 million. This is 50.2% less than a year earlier.
Rovio also shared the business indicators of its games.
