The authors of Shovel Knight doubled the price tag and went to Switch. Result: revenue increased by 115%
Indie studio Yacht Club Games offered its own version of the fight against the indie apocalypse. She raised the price tag for her game on all platforms, and at the same time went to the Nintendo Switch. Thanks to this, the company earned a record amount for Shovel Knight in 2017 in the entire history of its sales.
The chronology of the event looks like this:
- in March 2017, the developers of Shovel Knight updated the edition of the game, including all DLC and increasing the price from $14.99 to $ 24.99;
- at the same time, the project appears at the same price in the project store for Nintendo Switch.
Results
The most important one, which we have already noted a little above: revenue growth.
Shovel Knight’s sales revenue in 2017 was 115% higher than in 2015, which the company considered a record revenue.
The solution justified itself in the implemented copies. 2017 was the second year in terms of the number of copies sold of the game with a result of 495 thousand copies sold.
60% of this amount was made up of sales of Shovel Knight on Switch.
During the year, Nintendo Switch became the third platform in terms of the number of copies sold during the entire existence of the game.

At the same time, sales of the title on other platforms decreased by 30% (in copies).
Finally, the momentum from the sales of the game on Switch helped Shovel Knight recently overcome the milestone of 2 million copies sold.
The original Shovel Knight was released in 2014 on PC and Nintendo 3DS. The authors of the game were inspired by such classic 8-bit platformers as Zelda, Castlevania and Mega Man.
