Valve has released its first mobile game. It is built on the Source 2 engine

The first mobile game from Valve was Dota Underlords. Yesterday it was released on iOS and Android, as well as on Steam.

Dota Underlords
Dota Underlords is a clone of the custom Dota Auto Chess mod in the “autobattler” genre.

Valve started developing the title after there was a stir around the fashion in its Dota 2. The first Dota Underlords were tested by the owners of the Dota 2 battle pass. This test lasted a week. Now the game has reached the open beta.

Underlords can be considered the first independent Valve project for mobile, writes Gamesindustry.biz . After all, earlier mobile versions of its games (Portal and Half-Life 2) were released only for Nvidia Shield devices, and not on the broad market.

But even this is not the most interesting thing about it. According to the Telegram channel “Game Dev that we deserve”, Dota Underlords is made on Source 2 — Valve’s own game engine.

According to the channel, there is not a hint of Unity code in the Dota Underlords files. Apart from the third-party libraries, Valve has assembled everything using its own tools.

Gabe Newell, the head of Valve, stated that the company strives to implement its projects on Source 2. But before Dota Underlords, only PC titles were released on the engine, for example, Dota 2 itself and Artifact. Now, it seems that Valve has managed to adapt the engine for mobile devices.

Let’s add that Dota Underlords is still at an early stage of development, and it needs serious optimization.
