Newzoo: By the end of 2021, there will be 3 billion gamers in the world. More than half are from Asia
The analytical company Newzoo told what will happen to the video game industry in 2021. Despite the fact that the revenue will be less than last year, the market will continue to grow. The number of gamers will jump by 150 million people.
Revenue by segment:
- in total, the industry will earn $175.8 billion in 2021, which is 1.1% less compared to revenue in 2020;
- console segment will fall by 8.9% to $49.2 billion;
- PC segment to fall 2.8% to $35.9 billion;
- The mobile games segment alone will grow by 4.4% to $90.7 billion.
Lecture hall:
- By the end of the year, 2.96 billion people will be playing video games worldwide. This is 5.4% more than in 2020. Analysts expect that the number of gamers will continue to grow further. According to the forecast, by the end of 2024 there will be 3.32 billion gamers;
- 55% of gamers are from the Asia-Pacific region. This is 1.6 billion people.
- Africa is in second place in terms of the number of gamers — 434 million people or 15% of the total audience. Africa and Latin America (289 million gamers) are the fastest growing regions at the moment. This is due to the cheaper mobile Internet and the development of Internet infrastructure in general;
- although less than a quarter of gamers live in Europe and North America (408 million and 212 million, respectively), they bring 40% of revenue to the industry;
- In 2021, gamers are more likely than ever before to play simultaneously on PCs, consoles and smartphones. 90% of them (2.8 billion people) will play on at least mobile devices. 1.4 billion people will choose PC gaming, and 900 million will choose consoles;
- the concept of the metaverse will continue to gain popularity. Similar games became more in demand last year amid the pandemic. Then people lacked communication, they tried to make up for it in games. All this has led to increased attention to products developing as metaverses, and increased investment in companies developing games in this way.
