NPD: in May, the American gaming market earned $4.45 billion

In May 2021, Americans spent almost $4.5 billion on video games, hardware and accessories, according to a new report by NPD Group analysts. Among the best-selling games of the month in the USA were Resident Evil Village and Mass Effect: Legendary Edition.

Resident Evil VillageKey data:

  • the total revenue of the market last month reached $4.45 billion — an increase of 3% year-on-year;
  • American gamers again spent the most on the games themselves, subscriptions and cloud services — $4.07 billion. This is 3% more than in May last year;
  • sales of iron amounted to $244 million, which is 5% more in annual terms. For the fourth month in a row, Nintendo Switch became the leader among consoles both in terms of the number of copies sold and in terms of revenue in dollars;
  • but the income from the sale of accessories fell by 8% compared to last May — to $ 142 million.

Top 21 best-selling games in May

Important: NPD tracks sales of physical copies from retailers and receives data on the “figure” from publishers. But not all companies provide information. For example, Nintendo does not disclose digital sales of exclusives, and Activision Blizzard does not share information from Battle.net .

The rating is also based on net sales of games (without microtransactions and subscriptions). An asterisk marks titles in which digital sales were not taken into account. And the familiar ones are titles that did not take into account sales in the “figure” on Xbox.
